Ontario Soccer’s Ontario Player Development League (OPDL), presented by Toronto FC, officially wrapped up its sixth season over the weekend, as the OPDL Charity Shield match-ups took place at the Ontario Soccer Centre.

The top teams from the boys and girls U-14, U-15 and U-17 divisions competed in one game finals, in front of a packed house at the venue in Vaughan.

The U-14 Girls OPDL Charity Shield featured Markham SC taking on North Toronto SC.

While the OPDL Charity Shield is an integral opportunity to showcase the immense talent found within the OPDL before fellow OPDL members, scouts and families, the Charity Shield also raises money for Ontario charities.

Every dollar accumulated through the $5 admission rate is donated to Ontario charities, as chosen by the winning teams in each match.

Markham SC was playing for Covenant House while North Toronto was playing for Sick Kids Foundation.

Markham got off to quick start as Racquel Alexander wandered into the penalty area in the 11th minute, took her time to pick her spot and calmly slotted the shot home to make it 1-0.

Markham’s Holly Whelan increased their lead to 2-0 when her shot took a deflection in the 34th minute and trickled into the back of the net.

North Toronto did their best to get forward and put Markham under pressure but they were never really able to find good chances in the final third.

Markham’s keeper Gurleen Toor would secure the shutout as part of their 2-0 victory, as they went on to capture the U-14 Girls OPDL Charity Shield.
