Team Ontario continued their dominant run at the 2025 Canada Summer Games, cruising past Manitoba with a commanding 7-0 victory on Wednesday evening at the Fortis Canada Games Complex.

Coming off a strong 4-0 win over Prince Edward Island in their opening match (recap here), Ontario wasted no time asserting control in their second group stage game. From the opening whistle, the pressure was relentless.

In just the 2nd minute, Fiona Cortes-Browne fired a long-range effort that forced a rebound, which Sydney Taylor nearly converted, but Manitoba’s goalkeeper stood tall with a double save. Manitoba responded briefly in the 5th minute with two long-range attempts, both calmly handled by Ontario keeper Sofia Pagnotta, who remained composed throughout.

Ontario’s Danica Menard received a caution in the 9th minute for delaying the restart, and Olivia Coppolla Tapping was booked in the 17th minute following a shoulder-to-shoulder challenge. Manitoba nearly capitalized on the ensuing free kick, but Pagnotta again made the save.

Taylor was a constant threat, coming close in the 14th and 25th minutes, the latter a near-goal from distance that was tipped over the bar. The breakthrough finally came in the 33rd minute, when Cortes-Browne unleashed a rocket from 35+ yards. The Manitoba keeper spilled the shot, and Coppolla Tapping was there to tap it home for the opener.

Moments later, Ontario nearly doubled their lead on a brilliant counterattack initiated by Pagnotta’s long throw. Coppolla Tapping delivered a pinpoint long range pass to Daneeka Medley, who broke through but was denied by the keeper.

Ontario dominated the first half, registering dozens and dozens of shots compared to Manitoba’s handful.

We are really happy with the collective performance of the players," said Head Coach Dr. Tracy Vaillancourt. "They have bought in to our team philosophy and are embracing what it means to represent Team O at the Canada Games. We are having such a great time and are looking forward to taking on Alberta today.

The second half saw Ontario’s finishing sharpen, and the goals began to flow.

In the 53rd minute, a long-range shot slipped through the Manitoba keeper’s hands for Ontario’s second.

Sydney Taylor finally got her goal in the 60th minute, followed quickly by Riéle Nembhard in the 61st.

Substitutes joined the party, with Chiamaka Omeze scoring the goal of the match in the 65th minute—a beautiful long-range curling shot from outside the box.

Paige Rueffer added two more in the 70th and 80th minutes, sealing the 7-0 win.

With the victory, Team Ontario advances to the semi-finals, where they will face Alberta on Saturday. Alberta progressed from Group D with a 5-1 win over Saskatchewan and a 1-1 draw against Newfoundland.

Should Ontario prevail, they’ll play in the finals on Sunday, facing the winner of the other semi-final between Nova Scotia and Quebec.

Team Ontario kicked off their 2025 Canada Summer Games campaign in emphatic fashion, cruising to a 4-0 victory over Prince Edward Island at King George V Park in St. John’s. The defending gold medalists wasted no time asserting their dominance, showcasing the same quality that saw them defeat Quebec 3-0 in the 2022 final in Niagara.

Early Pressure Pays Off

Ontario struck just three minutes into the match. A dangerous corner kick caused chaos in the PEI box, and after the ball was allowed to bounce in the six-yard area, defender Fiona Cortes-Browne pounced and smashed it home to give her side an early lead.

PEI responded with a brief spell of pressure, nearly equalizing in the fifth minute when Lilly Macvicar beat her marker and delivered a low cross into the danger zone. However, Ontario goalkeeper Madeleine Boucher reacted quickly to deflect the ball, and her defenders cleared the danger.

Despite PEI’s efforts, Ontario controlled much of the first half. Azaiya Patterson was a constant threat down the flank, drawing a yellow card from Sophie Gallant in the 10th minute after a surging run. Ontario created several more chances, including a near-miss in the 29th minute when Cortes-Browne delivered a pinpoint cross to Samantha Cardoso, who just missed connecting.

Second-Half Surge

Ontario came out firing again in the second half. Just seconds in, Sabrina Morra unleashed a long-range effort that narrowly missed the target. In the 53rd minute, Danica Menard nearly doubled the lead with a curling free kick that rattled the crossbar.

The second goal finally came in the 63rd minute when Menard capitalized on a misplayed back pass, calmly slotting the ball past the PEI keeper to make it 2-0.

That goal opened the floodgates. In the 70th minute, Paige Rueffer scored the goal of the game with a thunderous strike from just outside the box that left the goalkeeper with no chance. Five minutes later, substitute Sydney Taylor added a fourth to seal the win.

Looking Ahead

With the win, Team Ontario tops Group A and will look to continue their strong form in their final group stage match against Manitoba on Thursday, August 21 at 6:00 p.m. EST. A win or draw would likely secure their place in the semi-finals, scheduled for Saturday, August 23, with the gold medal match set for Sunday, August 24.
